Australian hairstylist Kevin Murphy reveals the secret to the hottest hair trend and how to get crazy colour without the commitment
Kevin Murphy is a beauty pioneer. Since his spectacular handiwork was seen on Vogue’s March 2010 cover featuring the gorgeous Abbey Lee Kershaw,Gold Prom Dress brightly coloured, dip-dye hair has been in high demand. Everyone from music icon Lady Gaga to actress Kate Bosworth has been spotted sporting the look.
For the past three seasons designers have been sending models down runways with flourescent tips, a full head of colourful hair (yes, you Meadham Kirchhoff), or our current favourite, a few hidden streaks of colour à la Mulberry S/S 2012.
“I thought it was only going to last a season,” confesses Murphy, “but it keeps showing up and I think it’s going to be with us for a while. There are always micro trends happening and some of those micro trends have a mass appeal. I believe hi-def hair colour has appeal for a lot of different sorts of people.” His advice? If you can’t afford the new statement bag, introduce colour blocking to your wardrobe by changing your tresses with neon and pastel coloured streaks.
Constantly ahead of the curve, Murphy has just launched COLOR.BUG, a product especially designed for this purpose. “It’s for one night only and washes out the next time you wash [your hair]”, he reveals.
“Think of it as make-up for the hair,” says Murphy about the little ball of brightly coloured powder.
“Your foundation is moist and you apply the powder to set the foundation”.Other Color Dresses In other words, for intense colour, apply COLOR.BUG to moist hair with product in it (such as a setting lotion, cream or gel), and for pastel hair, “Do the same but use dry shampoo on top of the colour and brush through until you get the hue you want,” says Murphy.
